who we are and mission statement

Surly Ramics was started by Amy Davis Roth and you can click HERE to read about how it was started on our WHY SO SURLY page (if you have not already done so).

But the truth of the matter is there is NO WAY I could do this on my own and I have had a lot of help from a lot of wonderful people.

Most importantly is my main man...Johnny Skaare who gave me the encouragement to take a risk and to follow my heart when I started this project. (not to mention a place to live when I was down and out) If it wasn’t for his positive attitude and love there is no way I would even be here making art today. In turn I exposed him to the wonderful world of art and also showed him how to make jewelry. Now he is a true artist in his own right, making beautiful pieces right along side of me. In fact during crunch times with large orders he has really stepped up and helped Surly Ramics produce more pieces than I ever thought possible. Each one a beautiful shiny object of art. His creative design skills are blossoming and I am amazed by him on a daily basis. I can not thank him enough for his encouragement, hard work, words of wisdom and the millions of times he has made me smile.

So this is me... (Surly Amy)...

I am the one who keeps the websites going and I come up with most of the new designs and odds are if you order something its me who will design it and me who you will talk to.

and so this is Johnny...

The next person that can not go unnoticed is my mother, Charlene Roth. She taught me almost everything I know about art and definitely everything I know about ceramics! Every piece of jewelry we make is dedicated to her in some way.

She is an amazing artist and teacher and I am so very proud to be her daughter.

Thanks Mom...We love you! :)

He is an AMAZING drummer also! He is in a rock band called IMMUNE and rockin’ country cover band called DEAD HORSE.

I also want to thank my Father Jerry aka “JJ”...for feeding us on nights when we were painting for over 9 hours straight in my mothers ceramic studio... He makes some kick ass pastas! :)

Next I would like to give a big virtual hug to some of my friends who have encouraged me to keep painting and making art over the years...

Heather Darst, Dan Pennington, Silvia Estrada, Bunny, Cookie, Lola, CJ, Chris Blauvelt, Sawa, Johnny Scott, Marissa and Todd Reich, Michele (from Cannibal Flower), The two “Blues” Aleah and Travis, Judy and Anthony Albright (and for some reason Kent too ;)... you have all inspired me to be a better person and to carry on despite the odds.
